Album Review: Me Like Bees 'Songs from the Realm'

Thursday, March 8, 2018

Straight from the heart of Missouri, Me Like Bees are an american indie rock group taking the small town of Joplin by storm. The quartet have toured all over the US since their formation in 2009, and now they're taking on the apocalypse... or at least in comic form. The alt-rockers have teamed up with  Image Comics (best known for The Walking Dead) to create a soundtrack that will coincide with new comic series, The Realm.

So how does it work? Well with every issue, there is a single from the band to coincide. Artists working with artists- genius. Musically, the songs will mirror that of a group of people surviving a post apocalyptical, hostile world. There are five songs on the EP in total, and a description of the comic series is as follows:
Fifteen years ago, our world was overrun.  Creatures of myth—orcs, dragons, and other nameless horrors—threw the entire planet into total chaos. Among the wreckage of society, the survivors scrape and struggle to survive. Now, a powerful sorcerer marshals his forces, and a group of warriors must embark on a journey to reclaim our world from the growing darkness.

Sounds interesting enough! The first single is called "The River Divides." Maybe I've been watching too much of CW's Reign but I'm instantly envisioning a montage of teens overlooking a post war ridden country, ready to take power. The imagery created is undeniable.

I admit, I've never read a comic in my 21 years.... but I had the chance to listen to the rest of the EP during an exclusive press stream, and I see why Me Like Bees where chosen to help bring this to life. Musicians are already story tellers in their own way, and paired with a physical, tangible copy it's a win win. The songs breathe life into the project, making this the final piece of the puzzle that brings it full circle. Plus, one of the comic's creators is also from Joplin, and listened to the bands first album while creating! How cool is that?!

My personal favorites are If I Go (the intro is reminiscent to Kiwi by Harry Styles so you know I'm hooked) and Ruinous Days. Authentic indie rock pulses through the entire soundtrack, with punch in the gut beats shown especially in Long Gone.

Unfortunately, you'll have to wait until the official release of Songs from the Realm on March 30th, but you can check out the single and official music video now! It's juuuust enough of a tease that'll leave you begging for more. If Modest Mouse wrote a track for The Hunger Games, it would sound a little something like this.

Happy Listening! (and reading)
